How we plan to deliver the highest and best good to our community

To the Ovation West family and Evergreen community:

As we all navigate our own individual paths to healing from last week’s tragedy, a common theme is that coming together to laugh, to talk, to cry, and to simply be with one another is a powerful source of wellness. We all yearn for a sense of balance, yet it is undeniable that we are all forever changed.

As we have worked to come to a decision regarding the continuation of our fall theatre production, there were certainly many factors to consider. But the one driving question that demanded a satisfactory answer was this:

How can we deliver the highest and best good to our community?

Over the past 5 days, we have consulted with a diverse group of community members, students, parents, therapists and trauma experts, theatre industry professionals, our cast and crew, and our board and staff to answer this question. We have listened intently to widely varying perspectives and discussed them all at great length. We knew that no matter what we chose, there would be inherent risks, and that we would not be able to satisfy all concerns. We have placed an extremely high priority on the wellbeing of the young people in our cast, particularly those who are students at Evergreen High School.

So, after extensive consultation, discussion, and debate, we have decided to move forward with this production as scheduled. To ensure that the art we produce is a source of healing, community, laughter, inspiration, and joy for all who come, we are implementing the following changes:

Since this is truly a show about the romantic relationship between two people, we will be utilizing the title “Annie Get Your MAN” in all materials.
We are eliminating any and all sound effects that might resemble gunfire.
All firearm props are being replaced with non-threatening objects that still allow the cast to tell the story.
A mental health professional from Resilience 1220 will be on-site during all performances to provide support should any be needed.

At Ovation West Performing Arts, we know that the theater is so much more than distraction or temporary entertainment. It is a place where we create family, where we build community, where we discover deep truths about ourselves and one another, and where we find joy and inspiration. So much has already been taken from us all this past week. So much is no longer normal. As we choose to respond with empathy, understanding and connection we hope to be a force for good and light in our community.

Ovation West Announces Auditions for Two Upcoming Productions –

Instant Musical: Just Add Audience and Songs for a New World

Ovation West will be hearing initial auditions for both shows. Performers may choose to be considered for both productions or choose the show for which they would like to be considered. Callbacks for the productions will be separate at different times. See more information below.

Requirements:

Performers 17 years old and older are invited to audition.

Please prepare a ballad or up-tempo from a musical written in the 1960s or later. Please also bring a contrasting piece (i.e. if you chose a ballad for your first piece, your second piece should be an up-tempo from the same era) in case we want to hear a second piece. You are encouraged to also prepare pieces that show two very different characters. Please have sheet music for the provided pianist for both songs. Both songs should be under 3 minutes. We are not requesting a monologue, but definitely want to see your acting through your songs.

Production Information for Instant Musical: Just Add Audience:

Created and directed by Tim Kennedy, Instant Musical: Just Add Audience is a completely improvised two-act musical performed utilizing audience suggestions. It is performed as a Long Form Improv piece but also utilizes some aspects of Short Form Improv in its structure. It is preferred that performers have some background in improvisational theater, but that is not required to audition. Improv training will be provided to all performers as a part of the rehearsal process.

Audition Information:

The initial audition will only consist of singing. The callback audition will consist of improvisational warm-ups and games that will help the auditioner’s assessment of the performer’s willingness to take risks and their level of comfortability with improvisation as well as character development.

Roles:

We will be casting two casts of four performers (a total of eight performers) that will rotate for all performances. We are encouraging performers of all races and ethnicities, gender identities, sexualities, and abilities to audition for these roles.

Rehearsal and Show Information:

Rehearsals will take place in the Evergreen and Denver Metro Areas from September 20th – October 31st on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday evenings 7:00 – 10:00 pm and Saturday mornings (10:00 am – 1:00 pm) and afternoons (2:00 pm - 5:00 pm). Tech week will take place October 25th – October 31st with calls from 7:00 pm – 11:00 pm on weeknights.

Show run is November 1 – 9, 2025 with two shows per day on Saturday and Sunday as well as one show at 7:30 pm on Thursday and Friday. There is the possibility of an additional weekend of performances at a different space TBD November 14-16, 2025. We also hope that this show will be well received and revived at other times in the future.

Production Information for Songs for a New World:

Music and Lyrics by Jason Robert Brown

Directed and Musical Directed by Tim Kennedy

Songs for a New World by Jason Robert Brown is a contemporary song cycle that weaves together differing characters that have each reached a crossroads moment in their life. We meet each character as they are at the exact moment that will catapult them on a new journey. The show explores the shared human experience of standing on the precipice of a new horizon. The show is mostly sung and contains very little dialogue. Performers in this show are asked to take on numerous characters throughout the show.

Audition Information:

The initial audition will only consist of singing your prepared audition pieces. Performers that receive a callback will be sent musical sides that will ask them to prepare numerous cuts of solos as well as tight harmonied-ensemble singing.

Roles:

We will be casting four to eight performers that may include two swings depending on final casting. We are encouraging performers of all races and ethnicities, gender identities, sexualities, and abilities to audition for these roles.

Rehearsal and Show Information:

Rehearsals will take place in the Evergreen and Denver Metro Areas from January 10 – February 19, 2026 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday evenings 7:00 – 10:00 pm and Saturday mornings (10:00 am – 1:00 pm) and afternoons (2:00 pm-5:00 pm). Tech week will take place February 14 – February 19, 2026 with calls from 7:00 pm – 11:00 pm on weeknights and Saturday, February 14th (9:00 am – 5:00 pm with a lunch break)

Show run is February 20 – March 8, 2926 with shows on Fridays at 7:30 pm, Saturdays at 4:30 pm and and Sunday matinees at 2:30 pm.

We are thrilled to announce Ovation West Performing Arts (OWPA) and Mountain Youth Musical’s (MYM) Summer Musical Theatre Camp for 2025, returning to Center Stage, June 9-20. Offering tailored programming for kindergartners through high school, students will learn triple threat skills, acting, singing and dancing.

Kindergarteners - 2nd graders will prepare a full mini-musical directed by theater professionals each week. Middle School kids will prepare and perform the entire musical this year during their two week session! Our Theatre Tech workshops will have participants learning and working on all that makes the shows come alive behind the scene!

Swamped - a mini musical about friendship, tolerance, and courage. Kids registered for this week of camp will get to be frogs, dragonflies, turtles and other fun swamp creatures. (June 9-13)

Barnyard Moosical - a hilarious and imaginative mini-musical where kids play animals in an unusual farm. (June 16-20)

3rd - 5th grade

Pirates the Musical - a rollicking musical includes fabulously fun character roles like Bluebeard, Yellowbeard, Whitebeard, Purplebeard, No Beards, King of high Cs… (June 9-13)

Give Me The Sky, The Amelia Earhart Story - a musical that brings to life the incredible journey of Amelia Earhart, a real-life hero who defied the odds. (June 16-20)

6th-8th grade

Beetlejuice Jr. the Musical - an adaptation of the hit Broadway musical that brings the irreverent humor and heartwarming story of Tim Burton's iconic film to life. (June 9-20)

8th-12th grade

Tech Theatre - learn from professionals on all things behind the scenes (Costuming, lighting, set design and build etc.) We will have a full time instructor as well as experts in the field work with the kids to build life long skills related to theater tech. (June 9-25)

All 3rd - 8th graders will also have the opportunity to participate in a variety of daily theatre performances and workshops, enabling them to enhance their skills level toward becoming a triple threat as well as understanding the inner workings of musical theatre.

Most importantly, children will come away feeling inspired, empowered, and more confident than ever!

High School-age participants register separately for the Apex program production of "Something Rotten” at My Mountain Musicals.

This year, pre-and-post camp care is available for K - 5th grade participants, allowing for a full day option. Led by an adult theatre professional, the focus of the pre and post camp time will include singing, lunch, active theater related games, and play.

JOCK BARTLEY OF FIREFALL RETURNS TO EVERGREEN FOR A ONE-NIGHT ONLY BENEFIT CONCERT RAISING AWARENESS FOR SUICIDE PREVENTION

Call On Me Set for Thursday, February 13 at Center Stage, To Benefit Resilience1220, Wooden Hawk Foundation and Ovation West Performing Arts

Guitarist, singer, and songwriter Jock Bartley of the platinum record-selling band Firefall returns to Evergreen for Call On Me , a one-night-only benefit concert at Center Stage on Thursday, February 13, 2025.

Performing as Firefall Acoustic with fellow band member Steve Weinmeister, Bartley will share stories about collaborations with some of Rock 'n Roll's greatest and talk about his long-time advocacy for suicide prevention. Bartley has worked with the American Association of Suicidology among others to put on benefit concerts to raise awareness, help fund the first national crisis line, and save lives. Bartley’s original song Call on Me , has become an anthem to raise consciousness about the growing mental health crisis and suicide, especially among young people.

Proceeds from Call On Me will benefit foothills-based Resilience1220 , the Wooden Hawk Foundation, and Ovation West Performing Arts, nonprofits that support and encourage youth development.

"Audiences loved Jock when he headlined with Firefall at last year's Mountain Music Fest," said Michele Vanags, Chairwoman, Wooden Hawk Foundation. "Not only is he an incredible performer and storyteller, but he also has a deep compassion for students and the mental health of our youth. This connection sparked discussions and led to this night of music and conversation."

A founding and continuing member of Firefall, Bartley is known for his melodic, tasteful and fiery lead guitar style. He has performed with Fleetwood Mac, Stephen Stills, Neil Young, The Doobie Brothers, Dan Folgelberg, Journey, Heart, Poco, Nicolette Larson, and John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, among others. Firefall is on tour and currently finishing a new album, Friends & Family 2.

Stories of Transformation: Ava and Oliver Fusé

The Fusé family has much to say about the positive impact of performing arts on their family. It began early with their daughter, Ava, a 2nd grader, now 15 years old and a veteran of Ovation West Performing Arts and Mountain Youth Musicals annual Summer Musical Theatre Camp. As a toddler, the family home was her singing, dancing stage, makeup, and costume shop. Disney characters were her forte. It was clear the family needed an outlet for her energies, so she got involved in performance. As often happens, siblings and parents soon got involved - volunteering, carpooling, and helping with costumes, props, set construction, lights, and sound. For the Fusés, the theatre became a family affair.

Theatre also played a transformational role in the life of Ava’s younger brother, Oliver, who was cut off from school during Covid. The isolation of the pandemic, at a vulnerable age in his socialization, proved detrimental. The family supported and encouraged him to get involved at Center Stage. He faced his fears and slowly built skills and confidence.

However, the real transformation in the family came when Ava and Oliver played major roles in Ovation West’s 2023 premier of a charming and challenging new opera called The Christmas Spider alongside professional adult opera singers. They rehearsed with piano and orchestral instruments for the first time ever. The timeline was demanding. They were not sure they would be ready in time. Even Grandma got involved during a family vacation as they practiced their lines and dialogue on a long drive and vacation stay. They faced their fears with practice and preparation. They moved way out of their comfort zones. They took a risk. And they triumphed! Their stunning performance created a dramatic shift in confidence for both of them.

Now a freshman at Evergreen High School, Ava has become a student director for Mountain Youth Musicals which performs at Center Stage. She is quick to share the life lessons she has learned while growing up in the theatre: time management, discipline, confidence, public speaking, commitment, and the importance of teamwork, friendship, and community. Oliver, an 8th grader at Rocky Mountain Academy of Evergreen, says he has learned to talk to people without fear and ask for help when needed.

Such is the value of the performing arts in the lives of our young people, society, families, and our community. If you value the performing arts as I do, make room for them in your life and support our local arts organizations. We’ll all be better for it!

The power to Create Connections and Dissolve Divisions.

For years, people have asked me why I chose a career in music. For years, I didn’t have a great answer for them, I just knew it held some deep and inexpressible meaning for me. It wasn’t until I led a choir on a tour through Romania about 10 years ago where we performed for orphans, prison inmates, abandoned disabled youth, and impoverished Romani children that the true power of music and the arts became clear to me.

Music holds an immense power to Create Connections and Dissolve Divisions.

In the wake of the recent election, I was struck by the fact that half of the country was triumphant and overjoyed while the other half was shocked and dismayed. I have often wondered what might happen if, instead of trying to assert their righteousness and ideology on one another, our elected representatives chose to begin legislative sessions by singing together. If our leaders could join their voices in unified harmony singing “America the Beautiful” to re-affirm their shared nationality – their shared humanity – perhaps the rest of us might not find ourselves baffled and afraid of the people across the street.

Since Congress does not yet have a resident Music Director, then I suppose it falls to community arts organizations to fill that need!

Ovation West’s mission to transform and inspire our community is rooted in the mystical, magical power of music, theatre, and the performing arts to bring us all together in a shared experience and to reveal to us those deep, universal truths about the human condition. Truths that remind us that we all love, we all hurt, we all hope, we all despair, regardless of which candidate’s sign graces our front yard, what name we use for the Divine, what language we use to tell our kids we love them, or how many years we have trod the earth.

At this past weekend’s outstanding “Star Shower” concerts, as I looked out at many familiar faces in the audience, I knew that their love of beautiful music transcended any differences they might harbor. The lauds and adulation we have received from attendees since then have only affirmed that notion.

The Chorale’s next concert, “Lincoln Portrait,” will include the One World Singers and the Evergreen Chamber Orchestra in a massive display of collaboration and cooperation, with an even greater focus on unity and the American Dream. But you don’t have to wait until the end of March to experience more of the magic of great musical performances!

December is a busy month at Center Stage , with the next installment of the “Sounds of Silents” film series on December 5th, the return of David Arkenstone’s ever popular “A Winter’s Eve” concert on December 6th, a free (yes, FREE!) Holiday Carol sing-along for the whole family on December 14th, and Altezza Chamber Choir’s annual Mountain Holiday Concert with the Evergreen Chamber Orchestra right next door at Evergreen Christian Church on December 21st.

Here's a fun fact: Did you know that ticket sales only make up about half of what it takes for arts organizations like Ovation West to put on all these concerts, shows, and events? Some of the rest comes from grants, but a large portion of what is required to do what we do comes from the direct support of the people who recognize the real value of the arts in our society.

You can show your support and help us to preserve, promote, and protect the arts in Colorado by making a donation on Colorado Gives Day . Vintage Theatre and Ovation West Theatre Company announce auditions for SISTERS OF SWING

ABOUT THE SHOW: This book musical follow sisters LaVerne Maxene and Patty from their early days on the road through their rise as recording stars to entertaining American GIs overseas to their breakup. The score intermingles over twenty hit songs and goes beyond the ordinary to offer a unique perspective into these women as human beings, showing how the events of their lives shaped who they became to the rest of the world, The Andrews Sisters!

PAY: All actors will receive a $100 travel stipend and $45 per performance.

WHAT TO PREPARE: Please sign up for one of the time slots via the link below. Actors will be seen in the order they arrive the day of auditions. You do not need to stay the entire time. Please prepare a 16-32 bar cut of a song in the style of the show and one of the monologues in the attachment below.

BRING WITH YOU: Photo, resume, and conflicts for October – January.

REHEARSALS: Rehearsals will begin the week of October 28th. Please note tech week is immediately following the New Year’s Holiday. Actors will also need to be available for a few rehearsals leading up to opening night in Evergreen.

PERFORMANCES: Sisters of Swing is a co-production between Vintage Theatre and Ovation West Theatre Company. Performances will take place January 10 – 19th at Vintage Theatre in Aurora and January 24th – February 2nd at Center Stage in Evergreen. Actors must be available for the full run of the show at both venues. Rehearsals will take place between Aurora and Evergreen.

Seeking 3 strong female presenting Singer-Actors (and one swing) who move well. All three sisters must have excellent musical skill and the ability to sing three-part harmony. These actors will portray The Andrews Sisters from childhood to maturity.

Seeking 2 male presenting actors to play various roles. The actor playing the role of Vic must also be able to play piano-accompany a few select songs.

Patty: 20s-30s Lead singer, youngest sister. Clown of the group, adores the spotlight.

Maxene: 20s-40s Soprano, middle sister. Outspoken sister, always testing boundaries.

LaVerne: 20s-40s Alto, oldest sister. Closest to parents, tends to be a little mother. Plays the piano.

Man: 20s-40s Strong actor-singer. Plays a wide variety of characters throughout the show

Male Actor-Pianist: 20s-50s Plays Vic Schoen (the sisters arranger and Pattys love interest). Will also play select Ensemble roles throughout the show.

Man of La Mancha Cast Announcement

We are pleased to announce the cast of Ovation West Theatre Company’s upcoming production of Man of La Mancha . Inspired by Miguel de Cervantes’ 17th-century masterwork Don Quixote and set during the Spanish Inquisition, the original 1965 production won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

While in prison awaiting trial during the Spanish Inquisition, Cervantes and his fellow prisoners perform a play-within-a-play, telling the story of the elderly Alonso Quijana, who renames himself “Don Quixote” and goes on a quest to right all wrongs in the world. The rousing, Spanish-inflected score includes the classic numbers “The Impossible Dream,” “I, Don Quixote,” “Dulcinea,” “I Really Like Him” and “Little Bird.”

Performances are September 13th – September 29th on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 and Sundays at 2:30, and an Industry Night performance TBD.

It’s Spring Time! With the warmer weather, longer days, and abundant pollen destroying my sinuses comes new life, new hope, and new opportunities for transformation and inspiration through the arts.

Last month, The Evergreen Chorale teamed up with the Denver Children’s Choir to give an inspiringly beautiful concert of hope and vision for a world in which we celebrate the wondrous diversity of human expression.

Neither blizzards nor windstorms kept Ovation West Theatre Company from bringing the large-scale spectacle of “The Wizard of Oz” to over 1,300 people from all over Colorado. As one audience member posted: “My wife and I attended “The Wizard of Oz” performance yesterday. What talent, great props, wonderful costumes, awesome musicians, orchestrated perfectly…where we could simply watch a beautiful performance minutes from our home. We were “first-timers” after living here 3 ½ years, but it will definitely not be our last!”

It has already been a busy spring, to say the least, but there is no shortage of transformative and inspirational events on the horizon.

On Sunday, April 28th, Center Stage will be host to the 1st annual Art Song Colorado singing competition. An all-day competition will conclude with a public concert of the finalists representing the best up and coming classical singers in the state. Mark your calendars for Friday, May 3rd, as we hold the Center Stage Centennial Celebration Gala honoring 100 years of music and theatre at Center Stage. This 1920s-themed party will feature live performances by the stars of this year’s shows as well as local favorite John Erlandson. On May 11th, internationally renowned singer Douglas Webster closes out the Ovation Concert Series with “The Broadway

Baritone.” Doug is one of the most inspiring musical storytellers I have ever had the privilege to witness. He takes songs that are already barn-burners and tear-jerkers and infuses them with new life and personal meaning, weaving together an unforgettable evening of artistry. You definitely will not want to miss this one!

And don’t forget about free Classic and Silent Film Nights every month at Center Stage. May 9th is “Classic Comedians” – a collection of some of the best comic actors of the silver screen, with the likes of The Three Stooges and Laurel and Hardy. On June 6th Patrick Lee returns with a prodigal piano accompaniment of Buster Keaton’s masterpiece silent film, “The General.”

The Evergreen Chorale is already hard at work preparing their next big collaborative project – the transcendently beautiful Brahms Requiem. This concert will be with the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra at the Colorado School of Mines Green Center for one day only on Sunday May 19th at 3 pm. And to cap off a transformative 2023/2024 season, we are returning to our collaboration with Mountain Youth Musicals for our annual Summer Musical Theatre Camp. If you are looking for a summer camp experience for your kids that will give them confidence and camaraderie though inspirational performing arts training (including options for theatre tech), then make sure to sign them up before space runs out! For teenagers 15-20, we are mounting a full performance of Stephen Sondheim’s classic tale “Sweeney Todd” through MYM’s new Apex company. All roles are open for consideration, and tuition for this new program is “pay what you can” to ensure that we can provide top notch performing arts training to any and all high schoolers.
